Regulation of Space activities in Europe

Regulation of Space activities in Europe

Lecture start at 12:30pm, Thursday 10 March 2016, Brussels

By Tanja Masson-Zwaan, Assistant Professor at the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University, President of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and member of Air and Space Academy.

This presentation will first set out the basic premises of international space law. Starting with the adoption of five treaties within the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in the late 1960s, when space activity was mainly conducted by the USA and the former USSR, it will explain the changed landscape with many more countries now active in space and the increasing privatisation and commercialisation of space activity which lead to a need for national space legislation. After setting this context the role of Europe in space activities will be addressed, focusing on the legal issues regarding the roles of and cooperation between the European Space Agency and the European Union, as well as the current status of national space legislation in various EU member states.
