Окончил Институт воздушного и космического права Кельнского университета (Кельн, Герамания). Присуждена степень PH.D.

Окончил Институт воздушного и космического права Университета МакГил (Монреаль, Канада). Магистр права (LL.M).

Преподавательская деятельность: 

Он является сотрудником Европейской ассоциации воздушного права (EALA), член консультативного совета Журнала воздушного права и коммерции (СМУ-Даллас), Немецкого журнала воздушного и космического права (ZLW) и Журнала авиации и космонавтики (онлайн).

Иное: 

Он регулярно консультирует по вопросам финансирования воздушных судов и двигателей и лизинговых сделок (немецкий и трансграничный лизинг, продажа и покупка воздушных судов и двигателей, регистрация прав и защита интересов, восстановление во владении).

Он имеет обширный опыт консультирования и представления интересов авиакомпаний, аэрокосмических производителей и их страховщиков по вопросам ответственности и проведение комплексных судебных процессов с участием сторон из разных стран.

Его практика также сосредоточена на вопросах регулирования, правах пассажиров, доступа в аэропорты, вопросах конкуренции, альянсов и совместном использовании кодов (code sharing), делах о несостоятельности, регулировании ответственности туроператоров, вопросах обмена налоговой информацией, контрактах на обслуживание, лицензирование, корпоративные сделки и др.

Он выступал на темы воздушного права в Европе, США, Ближнем Востоке, Азии и Австралии. В течение многих лет он организовывает семинар по ответственности Европейской ассоциации воздушного права (EALA).

Доктор Николай Элерс является партнером Ehlers, Ehlers & Partner (Мюнхен, Германия), отвечающим за авиационную практику, является квалифицированным юристом как в Германии, так и в Нью-Йорке.

Принимал участие в качестве докладчика Шестой конференции по воздушному праву (14 октября 2016 года, Санкт-Пебербург), Седьмой конференции по воздушному праву (6 октября 2017 года, Санкт-Петербург),  Восьмой конференции по воздушному праву (26 октября 2018 года, Павловск, Санкт-Петербург).
